To users of Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness area,
A commercial developer has requested a rezoning hearing for 50+ acres of land on the NE corner of 61st & Hwy 75. The developer's plan is to build a commercial development similar to what has been built at 71st & Hwy 75. Please review this link http://www.tmapc.org/Agenda/Z-7089.pdf for details of their plans.
The area up for rezoning would cover the land west of the City's Turkey Mountain property to Hwy 75 and the land South of the YMCA's property to 61st street. The area is privately held land, but certainly considered part of Turkey Mt by the users of Turkey Mt. I know we would lose some great trails and greenspace if this commercial development happens. I also fear it would open the door for other commercial development to take place on the remaining privately held land at Turkey Mountian.
The re-zoning meeting is March 5th...details to be posted on the http://www.incog.org/ website.
I have contacted the Riverparks Department, the hearing is a public hearing and anyone opposed to commerical development in that area is welcome to show up and voice their concern. The TMAPC/INCOG makes the final decision and public input is part of that decision.
If we have a strong presence at the rezoning meeting I am confident we could impact the final decision on commercial development at Turkey Mountain. We may be able to put the final decision on hold until other possible areas are looked at as alternatives for the developers (westside of 71st & Hwy 75 maybe??).
I feel like a resolution could be made that can work for all parties (private land owners, commercial developers, YMCA, users of Turkey Mt).
Please contact me if you would like to attend the meeting to represent the preservation of greenspace at Turkey Mountain.
